Electric Pallet Truck Pre-Shift Inspection: What Should Operators Check?

An electric pallet truck may make hundreds of short trips in a busy warehouse. Before the first pallet is moved, a brief inspection can help reveal damage, leaks, or control problems that might otherwise appear during operation.

The exact checklist should follow the truck manufacturer’s instructions and your workplace procedures. These five areas are a useful starting point.

1. Walk Around the Truck

Look for visible damage, loose parts, or fluid leaks. Check that the forks are straight and free from cracks or obvious deformation. Make sure the load wheels and drive wheel are in good condition and clear of debris that could affect movement.

2. Check the Battery Area

Confirm that the battery is secured and that accessible cables and connectors show no visible damage. Check the charge level before starting a demanding shift. If you notice a damaged connector, unusual odor, leakage, or excessive heat, stop and report it. Battery inspection and charging should follow the instructions for the battery type fitted to the truck.

3. Test the Controls in a Clear Area

With the area clear and the forks unloaded, check travel, steering, lifting, and lowering. Test the horn and the emergency stop function according to the operator manual. The truck should respond predictably, without unusual noise, vibration, or hesitation.

4. Check the Working Route

Look at the floor and the planned path. Debris, damaged flooring, ramps, tight turns, and pedestrian traffic can all affect a pallet truck’s operation. Confirm that the truck and its rated capacity suit the load and route.

5. Report Problems Before Use

If a defect could affect safe operation, take the truck out of service and report it for inspection or repair. Do not rely on a quick workaround to finish the shift.

A consistent pre-shift routine takes only a short time, but it gives operators a clearer picture of the truck’s condition before work begins.
